Elementary School Workshops and Assemblies:
Suggestions for follow up

Inside Out Steel Drum Project
C.J. Menge, Director
  1. Refer to the Pan Information sheet for ten basic points about the steel pan and its origins.
  2. For more detailed information, refer to the Chronological Timeline, the Abbreviated History of the Steel Drum, and the information about how a Steel Pan is crafted and tuned.
  3. For class participation, refer to "Ophelia letter blow 'way". This is a traditional Trinidadian melody. The sheet also has performance suggestions, including a clapping rhythm and musical ostinatos.
  4. Make up your own rhythms to accompany "Ophelia Letter blow 'way", or any other song. Incorporate some of the instruments from the workshop or performance, such as the shaker, the can scraper, or the glass bottle.
  5. Make your own shakers from two cups taped together with rice or small beans inside. Use paper cups, so that the students can decorate their shakers with paint, crayons, or markers. Be sure to have them decorate the cups BEFORE they fill them with rice and tape them together.

See package of follow up materials to include "Ophelia Letter blow 'way" is from Folksongs from the Caribbean, selected and arranged by Ken Bolam and Peter Gritton. Copyright 1993, by Faber Music Ltd.
